We Looked Around

ree

Our goal was originally to build a homestead in Washington State. We knew we could save a lot of money in taxes because there is no state tax there. However there were tons and tons of rules, laws, and expenses to get all the way across country.

Washington State was so gorgeous and it's number one for asthma sufferers so we thought it was perfect, but trying to find land there was not happening. Every property I looked at disappeared within days. Everywhere we looked there were so many codes how could we ever build? You can't even have a trailer there unless it is new. Shame on them for making it almost impossible to build a dream home without at least a hundred thousand dollars.

I was looking up towards Okanogan County and I think due to the shows that highlight various homesteaders in that area, the land is being bought up like hotcakes.

I also thought about Alaska but I know my husband could not do it. He has always been a bit sick and has recently had even more challenges so I was worried about the cold weather 9 months out of the year.

We thought about Oregon. The land is cheap and the trees are beautiful but I was not sure I could find land we could afford that wasn't real dry or desert-like there. I wanted something lush and green.

We looked in North Carolina. Nope. Nothing there I was interested in. Nothing much at all. And we would still be dealing with the misery of Virginia summers. It feels so awful and sticky and you can't breathe if you have asthma.

Then we found land in the Ozarks in Missouri. So beautiful, green and a long growing season! At first I was doubtful but after looking around for a few months I kept coming back to it. The data showed it had less humidity and less oppressive barometric pressure. I wasn't sure if my asthma could deal with it until we went out there and I did not need my inhaler at all, even climbing steep land.
